A Little Forethought in Choosing Your Baby Knit Pattern

Have you decided what you might want to knit? Something simple and easy for a beginner. Something small. Okay, you are just learning the difference between a knit and a purl. You have to decide on some baby knit pattern to get started, well I suggest you start with a baby knit blanket.

Why? Because it is easy and it is a job you can complete in a reasonable length of time. Also it is worked on straight needles, which in my opinion is one of the easiest ways to learn knitting. You can make it any size, color or texture. The sky is the limit. Also it is a portable project. You can take it along. It is so fun to knit wherever you are, in the doctor’s waiting room, waiting for the arrival of your friend at the airport. Waiting to purchase the latest concert tickets camped out in line since 5am, see what I mean?

There are tons of baby knit patterns all over the web. So find one you like and then go shopping.

If you know the color scheme of the baby you are knitting for, nursery, the choice is simple. Or if you already know the sex of the baby before it arrives you are all set. If you do not know these two things and you are still interested in this baby knit pattern, then just go for it. Choose a color that you like that would be kind of generic for any baby. When you go to the yarn shops you will be dazzled by the choices. There are many many colors and textures. There are soft fuzzy ones and tweedy ones, and richly textured, touchable yarns. This will be the hard part making your choices.

Once you have your choices. Be sure to read your pattern and purchase enough yarn to complete your baby knit pattern. You want it to be one color lot number. But as mentioned in previous posts, you don’t have too much worry because you are really only purchasing a small quantity for such a small piece. So you can actually afford to take a look at those wonderfully expensive yarns, if you so decide. Of course, you may want to try you hand at knitting on less expensive yarn to just get the hang of it.

I’ll tell you a little secret that has saved me so many times, it is really necessary that I share it with you. When you find baby knit patterns, or any pattern for that matter, that you like, save it! You must organize your patterns. I have a small filing cabinet with dividers, blankets, caps, booties, dresses, etc. And then I put a sticky note on each pattern,

“easy to knit”

“add 10 extra stitches in width”

“real winner with mother”

“takes a bit of work but worth the effort”

“great take along project”

“not so great for fuzzy yarn, better in cotton”

you get the drift here. Tell yourself reminders about the pattern to make your next knitting of it more fun.

I can’t tell you the hours I have wasted looking through drawers and magazines for a pattern that I knew I had but couldn’t find it. If someone would have told me this secret when I started it would have been so timesaving and valuable to me. So I hope this helps you.

And I hope you get started on your first baby knit pattern and make that gorgeous new baby blanket for the next little someone coming into your life. Have fun!

Oooooooh, the knitting for baby pattern is intimidating you. It is a strange language of letters without words, p, k, co, yo, k2, k2tog, what are you to think?

Well let me tell you. It is really a basic language that can be learned in a single setting. You can go over to About.com and learn tons of knitting stuff.

P = purl

K= knit

These are all just shorthand for being able to instruct you as to what to next to make the baby knitting pattern come together without being so longwinded you couldn’t possible keep your place. And once you get used to reading it becomes second nature, I promise.

No matter what pattern you have chosen to knit for baby, the author of the pattern will give you all the abbreviations used in the pattern and they will be written out in longhand so you will know each one. Usually if the pattern stitch is less than common, the author will even given you a demonstration as to how to perform that particular stitch. They recognize that the baby knitting patterns can sometimes be intimidating. So they do all they can to make it as easy and understandable as possible.

If you are still uncertain, find out who your knitting friends are, and check with them. Or go to a yarn shop, they usually offer knitting classes.
